Unit 2: Identifying and Eliminating Waste (Muda)

  • The 7 types of waste (Muda):
    1. Overproduction
    2. Waiting
    3. Transport
    4. Extra Processing
    5. Inventory
    6. Motion
    7. Defects

  • Tools for eliminating waste: 5S, Kaizen, and Standardized Work.

Unit 3: Value Stream Mapping (VSM)

  • Introduction to Value Stream Mapping: Mapping processes from end-to-end to identify value-added and non-value-added activities.
  • How to create a Value Stream Map:
    • Steps involved in mapping a process.
    • Understanding the flow of materials and information.
    • Identifying bottlenecks and inefficiencies.
  • Analyzing Value Stream Maps to uncover improvement opportunities: Focus on improving flow, reducing lead time, and eliminating waste.
  • Hands-on exercise: Create a Value Stream Map for a sample process and identify areas for improvement.
  • How to use VSM for Lean transformations: Aligning improvement projects with strategic goals.

Unit 4: Lean Tools for Continuous Improvement

  • Kaizen (Continuous Improvement):
    • How Kaizen drives small, incremental improvements that add up over time.
    • Key Kaizen activities: Identifying problems, brainstorming solutions, implementing changes, and reviewing results.
    • Fostering a Kaizen culture within teams and organizations.
  • 5S Methodology (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain):
    • Creating an organized and efficient workspace to improve productivity and reduce waste.
    • How to implement 5S in your organization: Steps and best practices.
    • Hands-on exercise: Implementing 5S in a sample workspace.
  • Standardized Work:
    • The importance of standardized procedures for consistent quality and efficiency.
    • Developing and documenting standard operating procedures (SOPs).
    • Training employees to follow standardized work methods.
  • Kanban (Pull Systems):
    • Introduction to Kanban: A Lean tool for managing work and inventory in a flow-based system.
    • How Kanban helps reduce overproduction and excess inventory.
    • Visualizing work and limiting work in progress (WIP).
